Max Pechstein was one of the most electrifying voices of German Expressionism — a painter and printmaker whose bold colours, angular figures, and raw emotional energy helped define one of the most radical art movements of the 20th century. Born in Zwickau in 1881, Pechstein trained at the Royal Art Academy in Dresden before joining the legendary Die Brücke group alongside Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Erich Heckel, drawing inspiration from Van Gogh, Matisse, and the Fauves, and later from the tribal art of the South Seas during his travels to Palau. His work was so powerful and so free that the Nazis classified it as Entartete Kunst — Degenerate Art — seizing over 300 of his paintings from German museums and banning him from painting or exhibiting. History, of course, proved them wrong: today, Pechstein’s expressionism prints command millions at auction, and his legacy as a fearless, visionary German artist endures in museums and collections around the world.
