Edward Theodore Compton — the English-born landscape artist who painted the Alps like no one before or since. Born in London in 1849, Compton was forever changed by his first encounter with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks of the Bernese Oberland — and devoted his life to capturing the raw majesty of mountains on canvas. A member of the Royal Academy and the elite Alpine Club, he completed over 300 major ascents — including 27 first ascents — sketching and painting as he climbed through the Tyrol, Scandinavia, Corsica, the Scottish Highlands, the Lofoten Islands, and even the Colombian Andes. His oil paintings and watercolors are celebrated for their breathtaking light, ascending mist, and topographical precision, blending English Romanticism with an impressionistic feel for atmosphere. He illustrated landmark books for the German and Austrian Alpine Association and influenced a generation of landscape artists, including his own children. These are the modern mountain art and landscape painting masterpieces your walls have been dreaming of.
